It's official β my next big trip of 2027 is here, and it's the one I get asked about more than almost any other destination: New Zealand.
I led a group through New Zealand's South Island in January 2025, and it's still the trip my travelers bring up unprompted β the kind of "remember when" that surfaces in random conversations, completely out of nowhere, months later. Today, it's back.
New Zealand. 13 days. January 30 β February 13, 2027.
A quick note before I go further: this trip went out to my Pivot Preferred travelers first, and it's already moving. We're down to 10 spots. Trips like this are first come, first served, and the 2025 departure filled faster than almost anything I've run β so I didn't want to wait to get this in front of the rest of you.
New Zealand's South Island is one of those destinations that sits on nearly every list β and almost never gets booked well. And I get why. Good hotels are genuinely scarce, especially in the small towns this route runs through, and the ones worth staying at need to be locked in months ahead. The driving is spectacular but demanding β mountain passes, one-lane tunnels, remote stretches with no cell service. Most people either see it from a cruise ship deck for an afternoon, or rent a car and gamble on figuring it out themselves.
So I built the trip that removes every one of those obstacles. A private local driver with you for all 13 days. Premium properties held in dedicated room blocks, arranged months in advance, so this group never settles for whatever's left. You show up. I handle everything else.
And this is not a standard South Island tour. This itinerary goes deep β a helicopter landing on an active glacier, a night anchored in one of the most remote fjords on Earth, a scenic train regularly ranked among the best in the world, and a full day of wine country built for nothing but slowing down. Thirteen days, five completely different landscapes, one island.

A heli-hike onto the Tasman Glacier, 3,000 meters up, then two hours in crampons walking across ancient blue ice in the shadow of the Southern Alps' highest peaks. The TranzAlpine crosses the Southern Alps coast to coast, and it's not an exaggeration to call it one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world. Huge viewing windows, open-air viewing decks, and a full day of scenery that genuinely doesn't look real.

An overnight small-ship cruise into Doubtful Sound β no cell signal, no crowds, no light pollution. Just water, cliffs, and after dark, more stars than most people have ever seen at once. After the adrenaline of the quad-biking, this is where the trip exhales.

A full day in Central Otago wine country β no hiking boots, no schedule, just good Pinot Noir (and even Pinot Blanc) and better company. Adventure trips need a counterweight, and this is ours.

Why Now?
This is a trip I don't run every year β the driver relationships, the room blocks, the level of planning this route demands take real time to put together. January and February are Southern Hemisphere summer, which means New Zealand's best weather window and also its busiest travel season for accommodation. While you're bundled up back home in the dead of winter, you could be sipping Pinot Noir on a sun-drenched terrace in Central Otago, or floating down the Dart River in the middle of a warm New Zealand summer β this is about as good a reason as any to get on a plane in January.
